[W&B] Separation Anxiety

Oh damn, so you still remember that thing? Rats.

Zentmayer, on the other hand . . . no two like items have ever fit between
my lenses. It as if each lens were handmade by a different person to some
general guideline instead of to specifications.

You know, it is remarkable thing how little it takes for things not to fit.
The tolerances for 32-pitch threads on a 3" diameter lens cell to thread
onto the corresponding barrel threads have to be within a few 10,000ths of
each other in order to simply thread-on.

Larry, being a machinist, hates it when I ask for a "loose fit" - I like my
flanges to simply spin-on and stop when seated. If you don't watch him,
Larry makes technically correct threads with are water tight and it feels
like it takes 112 half-turns to get the thing fully on.

Zentmayer lenses - if everything came from one lens, everything will spin on
- loose tolerances. From different lenses, things will be so loose they'll
fall off, or so tight that they won't even start. And there is no such
thing as mass produced screws either. Even their small machine screws won't
interchange. Damnedest thing.

Actually, the above is true only for me. I know two other collectors who
routinely manage to find swappable Z components. It's a perversity of the
universe thing. Just not in my stars.

Milan:
I'm all for whimsy, and a good dose of luck doesn't hurt either!
Amazing mating story for your Globe; now please replicate for my Zentmeyer.

Steve

(Really did like your recognition of a bit of abstract art)
