Fred
I've spent a couple of hours trawling the genealogical sources and dug
up some more.
James Fludger Shew died 1874 in Marylebone district, London and was born
c.1810. He divorced his wife Jeanne Marie Helene Shew in 1870. She was
probably French.
I could not locate his baptism but believe I have found the baptisms of
eight of his brothers and sisters. I propose he is the son of John and
Sophia Shew and was probably born in Streatham, Surrey since I have
found a son John Fludger Shew born to this couple baptised 1820.
I still cannot find James F. on a single census and can't explain this.
I believe James John Shew was his son and that he was born c.1840
possibly in France and that he married Alice Saunders in 1870 in Pancras
district, London. When you take from Channing & Dunn that he is first
listed in under his own name in 1875 this fits in neatly with the death
of his father. It is possible another of his family or even someone
unrelated ran the business after James F. died and James J. set up by
himself.
J F Shew and Company dissolved in 1920. Fits with Channing & Dunn
stating no listing of company noted after 1919 but they state company
had become Staley, Shew & Co.
(Board of Trade: Companies Registration Office: Files of Dissolved
Companies - No. of Company: 165172; J.F. Shew & Company, Ltd. Ref. BT
31/25694/165172, The National Archives, Kew)
For my purposes I don't intend spending money to purchase certificates
but can supply reference numbers if you wish to.
Cheers!
Marcel

Marcel,
Thanks so much for your information on Shew. It's a start. Much
appreciated. Now, does anyone out there have an early Shew catalogue
that might give a history of the Company?
Cheers,
Fred
