I have an 1898 Steinheil Orthostigmat advert with illustration of the
lens.

Will e-mail scan directly to you.

Subject: [W&B] Catalog entry - Steinheil Orthostigmat

Greetings,

As always, I'm puzzled and stuck . . .

Does anyone have any catalog, dated from 1894 thru about 1900, that has
Steinheil Orthostigmat lenses in it?

The Orthostigmat name didn't appear until late-1893, and I have catalog
listings after 1900.

Every now and then it would be nice to crack open a lens and find what
you were expecting to see. But naturally, the lens I have doesn't match
anything in the reference material that I've got.

I know, I know . . . haven't we just done this? Yes, but that's how it
goes. It's like having to mow the lawn every other (insert f-word here)
day, it's just another of those cycle-of-life things. What? you guys
don't have to mow your lawns every (insert f-word here) other (insert
another f-word here) day? Don't get me started on lawns, life,
suburbia, futility, neighbors dogs, the stupid - stupid! - weather, etc.
Where was I . . . ???

The problem is that the engraving says Weitwinkel Aplanat which would
make it a wide angle RR type lens - but, of course, it turns out not to
be an RR-type lens. Has cemented triplets, instead of cemented pairs.

Who else has either Weitwinkel Aplanats or Orthostigmat lenses? Getting
them open and apart is relatively easy with basic household tools and a
bit of leverage. If they survive, getting them back together
more-or-less properly isn't hard at all.

For the curious, the lens and the various puzzlements can be seen at:

Thanks,
