Dan,
I agree with Milan on his first point. The staples are easily removed, no
mystery there, just takes patience and proper attention, but when you're
done with the scanning I highly recommend you do NOT bother replacing
them. Yes, in a sort of way, knowing the pages are no longer connected
will drive you a bit bonkers, but the catalog will survive better without
the staples. No rust, no more catching or tearing from the staple points,
and the pages will experience a lot less strain from opening and closing.
I find, since the catalogs have basically been pressed together in the
same orientation for so many decades, that the pages pretty much stay
where they belong anyway.
