Paraphrased exerpt from the CPA Tech note.
There are several aircraft lamps available that are a direct physical
interchange with the landing lamps and have a much longer service life
expectation. An example of such an interchange would be the 4509 (13 volts,
100 watts, 110,000 candlepower, 25 hour life) being replaced by a 4595 (13
volt, 100 watt, 10,000 candlepower, 300 hour life). 4522 (13V, 250W,
290,000CP, 25HR) replace with 4537 (13V, 100W, 200,000CP, 25HR). This
particular one has a slightly narrower beam width.
As may be noted, there is no free lunch and most of the replacements have
only about 1/2 the candlepower output of the original. Since illumination is
a square root function the replacements only suffer about a 25 to 30 percent
actual reduction in visibility distance and the horizontal and vertical beam
spread is very similar.
