I've been thinking about the HSI a good bit (I have one), and thinking  
about what it did -- provide a better representation of the horizontal  
situation than the pilot could do with the DG and VOR, putting that  
info together in his head.

The most basic handheld GPS provides great situational awareness.  A  
396 or 496 has amazing capabilities.

I've about decided that if/when my HSI goes belly up, if it need an  
expensive overhaul, I'm not going to do it.
